The Yale Liver Center

The Yale Liver Center is one of 16 NIH-funded Digestive Diseases Research Centers, and one of only 4 that focus on the Liver. It recently celebrated its 25th anniversairy when directorship changed from James L. Boyer, MD, to Michael H. Nathanson, MD, PhD. The Yale Liver Center supports investigation of liver structure, function and disease, spanning a broad range of basic and clinical research. Research support is provided through the Center's Core Facilities, as well as through Pilot Feasibility Projects that are offered annually. Currently, major research themes are cellular and molecular biology of hepatocytes, membrane transport mechanisms in the liver, hepatic metabolism, splanchnic hemodynamics, and clinical studies of various liver diseases. Approximately 40 independent principal investigators are members of the Center, which involves 13 departments at Yale, including Medicine, Pediatrics, Pathology, Pharmacology, Cell Biology, Epidemiology, Cellular and Molecular Physiology, Human Genetics, Immunobiology, Comparative Medicine, Laboratory Medicine, Biomedical Engineering, and Surgery. The Liver Center also supports weekly research seminars (on Tuesday afternoons) and clinical lectures (on Friday afternoons), in conjunction with the Digestive Diseases Section of the Department of Internal Medicine.
